1815 Parcel Map
What was Westport Island like when first settled? Some clues can be found in the first parcel map. In 1815, Stephen Parsons, who lived on Greenleaf Cove, was commissioned by Edgecomb (we were part of Edgecomb then) to develop the first parcel ownership map for taxation purposes. At the time, property owners were taxed by several of the "Great Proprietors". To resolve conflicting claims, Parsons surveyed the holdings of the island's residents. The acreage shown was of land within the parcel considered arable ("...making allowances for rocks, water, swamps and public highways..."). Click on any parcel to learn more.
